Dear Members,

It is with deep respect and sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Ray Splatt, a highly regarded and long-serving L.A.M.E. Ray commenced his aviation career with TAA on 7 January 1957 as an Engine Apprentice and dedicated over five decades to the industry with TAA, Australian Airlines, and Qantas.

Following his apprenticeship, Ray transitioned into servicing and secured engine licences for various aircraft in the TAA fleet, including a Maintenance Helicopter Licence. His commitment took him across the globe—from Tullamarine to Iran, where he supported B727 operations, and to Bristol for A300 maintenance following the Qantas merger.

A dedicated professional, Ray served in multiple key roles, including as an Engine Leading Hand and Type Specialist (Maintenance Watch). In January 2007, he proudly completed 50 years of exemplary service.

After retiring on 1 July 2007, Ray continued his passion for aviation by joining the Hawdon team, contributing his skills to international recovery operations for HARS, including the recovery of a Catalina aircraft.

Ray will be remembered not only for his exceptional technical knowledge and dedication to the highest engineering standards, but also for his generosity in mentoring young, inexperienced engineers. He set an example of integrity, commitment, and humility.

A man of many talents, Ray even drove to work in a car he built himself—a testament to his skill, creativity, and hands-on approach.

Ray’s contributions to aviation and the lives of those he worked with will not be forgotten.
