Dear members,

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of ALAEA member, Grant Northey.

Fellow LAME, Gordon Tym, has been kind enough to share some words below.

We are mourning the sudden and tragic loss of a universally loved peer.

Those who knew Grant will understand, now more than ever, what a special privilege it has been.

A true gentleman, skilled technician and devoted family man.

Grant started his career with Flight West Airlines back in the nineties, and then found his way into the Qantas system in Sydney. For the last 20+ years he’s made Brisbane Base his home.

He was a positive and totally unselfish man, wearing a baked-on grin, and would always make you feel better for having had a conversation with.

As a LAME he carried out his duties in a wise and professional manner, often relieving as a technical specialist, and enjoyed mentoring those who wanted to learn the craft.

His true home though, was the slice of paradise that he and his family created at Mt. Tamborine, along with the dogs, cats, horses and various wildlife that joined harmoniously with them. Grant was totally committed to family life with his wife Lara, and his two daughters Jess and Amity. Their sense of loss would be immense at this moment.

One of Grant’s other passions was to pack a swag and get away on two wheels, whether it be a 2-week enduro adventure beyond Birdsville or the Flinders Ranges; or a local ride around SE QLD.

Tragically, he was enjoying this with a friend on Sunday when he fatefully ended up being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He was 52.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to Lara and his daughters, plus all those who worked with Grant over the years, and knew what he stood for. He will be dearly missed.

Regards
